A history of Meadville, PA must include reference to the railroads. Meadville has been an important transportation center since the construction of the French Creek Feeder Canal in 1837.

A History of Meadville PA Railroads

By the late 1800s, many railroad companies operated in Crawford County including:

  • Atlantic & Great Western Railroad (A&GW)
  • Erie Railroad (ERIE)
  • Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR)
  • Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad (B&LE)

In the later years, Conrail (CR), the Western New York & Pennsylvania Railroad (WNYP), and the Norfolk Southern Railway (NS) all passed through Meadville. The rail yard was the focal point for the town’s industry.

When you are looking at history of Meadville, PA, it has to include the railroads and how they impacted industry and helped the town grow.
